
Aluminum does not rust and weighs about a third of what steel does. Ornamental steel is stronger, heavier, and looks more substantial. For coastal air, sprinkler overspray, or any automated gate where you want the operator running easy, aluminum. For inland properties where mass and presence are the point, ornamental steel.
One clarification first, because the terminology is a mess. Almost nothing sold as "wrought iron" today is actual wrought iron, which is a historical material largely out of production. What you are buying is ornamental steel — usually mild steel tube, fabricated in traditional patterns. That is not a scam, it is just the correct name.

Weight is the sleeper issue
Aluminum runs around 169 pounds per cubic foot; steel around 490. Same gate design, roughly a third the mass.
That number cascades:
- Smaller operator. A lighter gate lets you run an operator well below its rated capacity, and an operator working easy lasts far longer than one working at its limit. This is the most common cause of premature opener failure we see.
- Less post structure. A gate leaf is a lever, and a lighter leaf puts less overturning force on the hinge post and its footing.
- Less sag over time. Every gate wants to droop at the latch end. Less weight, less droop.
- Easier manual operation during a power outage.
If you are automating a wide gate, the weight advantage of aluminum is worth real money — not on the gate invoice, but on the operator, the posts, and the service calls.
Rust, without the fairy tales
Steel rusts. That is not a defect, it is chemistry, and the entire question is what stands between the steel and the weather.
The durable specification is hot-dip galvanizing to ASTM A123, then powder coat over that. The zinc layer protects the steel even where the powder coat is chipped, which it will be, because gravel and string trimmers exist.
The common shortcut is powder coat applied straight onto prepped bare steel. It looks identical on day one. In year four, every chip has an orange halo, and the bottom rail — where water sits — starts blooming.
Ask which one is in the quote. Two "ornamental iron gates" at different prices are frequently this difference, and it is the single most useful question you can ask a gate fabricator.
Aluminum sidesteps this entirely. It oxidizes on the surface and then stops. Powder coat on aluminum is for color, not protection.
Where aluminum gets a bad reputation
Because of bolted panel kits.
A lot of the aluminum gates people have seen are assembled from extruded pickets and rails bolted or screwed together. They are light, they are cheap, and they rattle. Over time the fasteners work loose and the gate develops a distinct wobble.
A welded aluminum gate built from proper wall-thickness tube is a completely different product. It is stiff, it is quiet, and it looks like a real gate. It also costs meaningfully more than the kit, which is why the kit is what most people have encountered.
If you are considering aluminum, specify welded construction and ask about wall thickness. If the quote is remarkably cheap, it is a kit.
Where steel is genuinely the right answer
Security presence. A heavy ornamental steel gate communicates something an aluminum gate does not. That is subjective and it is also a real reason people buy them.
Large ornamental designs. Dense scrollwork and complex patterns are steel's home ground. The material is stiffer, so intricate work holds its shape.
Repairability. Any competent welder can fix mild steel. Aluminum welding needs specific equipment and skill, so a damaged aluminum gate is more likely to need the original fabricator.
Impact. A gate that gets nudged by a truck or a tractor fares better in steel.
